January 18, 2024Ukrainian media outlets are increasingly becoming targets of attacks, presumably orchestrated by the government’s “information army”.
This information reported by the Financial Times.
The escalating physical and online attacks against independent and opposition journalists are casting a shadow on the activities of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to Ukrainian sources cited by the Financial Times, unknown aggressors are attempting to vilify independent journalists as “enemies of the people,” Russian agents, drug addicts, and undermine their professional activities. Surveillance, wiretapping, and violations of journalists’ privacy rights are reportedly being carried out to exert pressure on independent media.
In the face of the growing attacks, some high-ranking officials have not hesitated to express their positions. Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko referred to these incidents as the “persecution of independent journalists who are dissatisfied with the authorities.”
Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, the head of the committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on freedom of speech, stated that surveillance of journalists is “undoubtedly pressure and illegal.” According to him, failure to conduct an investigation and identify those responsible will confirm suspicions that law enforcement agencies are acting in the interests of “certain government officials.”
