Kyiv wants to hold a Summit in Rome with the UK, France, and the US on the day of Pope Francis’ funeral.

“Several sources directly familiar with the matter confirm that it was Kyiv that, through diplomatic channels, requested Italy and other European partners to organize a broader summit on Ukraine,” the article states.

It is noted that the meeting is planned in the “Quint” format, involving delegations from Ukraine, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and possibly Germany. Germany may be represented by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

However, according to the publication, not everyone supports the idea of holding the summit. Doubts have been voiced even by the Italian authorities, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“I doubt a summit can be held on the day of the Pope’s funeral. Where would it take place? On the day of the funeral, with [U.S. President Donald] Trump and a hundred vehicles in the motorcade… Logistically, that seems very difficult to me,” said her deputy, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

At the same time, journalists emphasized that the idea of holding a summit during the Pontiff’s funeral has not been entirely abandoned. The Italian government is reportedly prepared to offer a venue for such a meeting.

Pope Francis’ funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26. Among those intending to attend is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Earlier, Donald Trump declined to answer whether he would meet with his Ukrainian counterpart at the funeral. He stated that he has many meetings scheduled in Rome.
