The Secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language reviewed recordings of plenary sessions from 50 local councils across ten Ukrainian regions and found that Russian was used in 24% of them.
The list of “violators” includes the city councils of Zaporizhzhia, Kropyvnytskyi, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, and Bolhrad (Odesa region), Novhorod-Siverskyi (Chernihiv region), Samara (Dnipropetrovsk region), Vyshhorod (Kyiv region), and others.
It was noted that not only local officials but also attendees at these meetings spoke Russian.
The requirement to use only the Ukrainian language in local councils came into effect in the summer of 2024.
Earlier, Taras Kremin stated that the use of both Russian and Ukrainian was a form of “linguistic schizophrenia.”
The language ombudsman also announced plans to tighten control over the use of the Ukrainian language on the internet.
