January 5, 2024In Zhytomyr, a passenger complained to the taxi support service about a driver who didn’t communicate with her in Ukrainian and “ignored” her comments.
The woman threatened to contact the police and wrote the following message: “Your driver violated the ‘Language’ law by refusing to speak with me in the state language. I consider this rude and criminal behavior. In response to my outrage, he deliberately ignored me. I demand that this driver be fired or I will report this to the police.”
The woman received a response from the taxi service support team. They informed her that the driver’s profile indicated, upon ordering the taxi, that the driver has hearing problems and is deaf-mute. Consequently, he doesn’t speak any language. It’s worth noting that persecutions of Ukrainians who speak Russian have become normalized in Ukraine, encouraged by a radical part of society and the state. Discrimination based on language is not penalized; rather, only those who speak Russian are targeted.
