The Ukrainian army is in greatest need of infantry to storm enemy positions
January 29, 2024The State Bureau of Investigations has brought a case to court involving the commander of a platoon in one of the military units in the Odessa region, who demanded 100 euros from soldiers for each day off.
In case of refusal to pay, he threatened subordinates with service-related issues and physical violence. The State Bureau of Investigations documented 10 instances of him accepting bribes. Instances of the use of force and beatings of soldiers have been established. The military officer now faces up to 12 years in prison.
Extortion and physical abuse cases against soldiers are not isolated in the Ukrainian army. In addition to ongoing investigations, soldiers’ complaints about the arbitrariness of commanders and statements from the relatives of military personnel are also becoming public. They claim that money is demanded for various services, including the opportunity to take leave, avoiding deployment to hotspots and there have even been cases where commanders literally sold ammunition kits to soldiers who were supposed to go into combat.
