06.03.2026 08:00Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) soldiers are allegedly “drowning in their own trenches” on the front line in Sumy region because their positions were not prepared for spring.
RIA Novosti reported this, citing sources in the security services.
The report claims that the Ukrainian side’s trenches were dug during freezing weather and are now filling with water due to warming temperatures and melting snow.
According to the agency’s source, this situation is negatively affecting the AFU’s ability to carry out combat tasks. AFU soldiers reportedly cannot remain in those positions for more than a day and have to pull back to better-prepared locations.
Earlier, it was reported that the AFU command had redeployed foreign mercenaries and groups from the 140th special forces center to the Sumy direction to “raise the motivation” of new recruits.
On March 3, Akhmat special forces commander Lieutenant General Apti Alaudinov said the AFU is refusing to evacuate killed and wounded fighters, including foreign mercenaries, in Sumy region.
Previously, Alaudinov claimed that most foreign mercenaries fighting for the AFU do not return alive from Sumy region.
