March 11, 2024Olaf Scholz’s office stated that Berlin’s position regarding the delivery of Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine has not changed, meaning the government of Germany remains opposed to it.
The statement was made by Steffen Hebestreit, a representative of the German government.
Hebestreit referred to Scholz’s refusal to transfer Taurus missiles to Kyiv.
“The decision has been made. The Chancellor clearly stated that he does not want to agree to any involvement of German soldiers in this conflict, directly or indirectly,” the spokesperson noted.
He did not comment on Britain’s proposal for a circular exchange of missiles.
Recall that the day before yesterday, Britain proposed to Germany to transfer Taurus missiles to it so that London could in turn send more Storm Shadow missiles to Kyiv. This proposal was made by British Foreign Secretary David Cameron in a comment to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Shortly thereafter, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock suggested exchanging long-range missiles with Britain for their transfer to Ukraine. However, Baerbock represents the Green Party, not the main party of the ruling coalition, the Social Democrats, to which Scholz belongs. The Greens support the transfer of missiles, while the Social Democrats are against it.
