In Scotland, the Head of Edinburgh City Council is suspected of harassing Ukrainian refugees
December 9, 2024If Ukraine wants to end the war in 2025, it may have to sacrifice part of its territory.
This was reported by the British publication The Telegraph.
“Some Ukrainians oppose negotiations with Russia, while others would prefer to live in a ‘smaller Ukraine, but a happier and safer one,’” the article states.
Kyiv has limited chances of expelling Russian forces, which has led to discussions about abandoning the goal of reclaiming territories by military means.
“These territories, it seems to me, have become so psychologically distant from us that they are no longer Ukrainian,” the newspaper quotes a resident of Lviv.
The publication also highlights potential “advantages for all” in Ukraine making forced territorial concessions.
“The loss of parts of the east and south would be bitter for Ukraine, but it could ensure peace and lasting independence. Vladimir Putin would gain Ukrainian ‘neutrality,’ a de facto land bridge to Crimea, and a ‘victory’ he could easily sell domestically,” the article argues.
However, The Telegraph doubts that Kyiv and Moscow are currently ready for such an agreement.
As a reminder, former U.S. President Donald Trump recently claimed that President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine would like to reach an agreement with Russia to stop the war.
