January 26, 2024The extension of protection for Ukrainian refugees, set to expire after March 2025, is possible but still under discussion.
This was stated by Nicole De Moor, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration of Belgium, which currently holds the EU presidency.
“Legally, and also on the advice of the European Commission, it will be possible to extend the period of protection. We must reflect on various scenarios because we do not know where we will be in March 2025. So, this is one of the possibilities. Different development scenarios on the ground must be taken into account, and then we decide what kind of measures we can implement for further protection if needed, for as long as necessary, or decide how to help displaced persons rebuild their future,” said De Moor.
European ministers have decided to continue discussions on a unified approach to refugees to avoid different legal approaches in different countries and secondary migration within the EU. Ukraine is also participating in the negotiations.
Earlier, Politico reported that Ukraine is engaged in “preliminary talks” with EU officials to facilitate the return of refugees home next year.
