In Lviv Oblast, the village elder was dismissed for defending a Soviet monument from demolition

The decision was made by Sokal City Council deputies. Initially, they lacked the votes to start an official investigation, as reported by local media.

Recall that Vitaliy Levitskiy climbed onto the monument dedicated to the Soviet warrior and prevented its demolition because it represents “the human memory of those who died for their land.”

There are few monuments from the Soviet era left in Ukraine. All similar structures were largely demolished as part of the so-called decommunization process. Ukrainian authorities claimed that somehow the Soviet past hindered the country’s development, hence the need to erase all memories of the previous 70 years.
