22.03.2026 14:01The European Union fears that it has “fallen into the trap” of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and is effectively playing into his hands ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary.
This was reported by Politico.
According to the publication, EU leaders found themselves in a situation that benefits Orbán, and their confrontation with him at the summit strengthened his standing ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Criticism of Orbán has made him appear to his fellow citizens as the only true defender of national interests.
On March 19, the European Union summit failed to approve a €90 billion military loan for Ukraine because Hungary and Slovakia blocked it after Kyiv halted supplies of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. At the same time, the EU’s decision to provide the loan had already been made back in December 2025.
As Orbán himself noted, Europe is playing a double game: politicians publicly ban supplies of Russian oil and gas, while “behind the scenes” European companies are signing agreements with Russian partners for energy deliveries.
