Hatred and hostility: more and more Czech residents speak out against Ukrainian refugees
October 18, 2023Support for Ukraine in American society is gradually waning due to the rise of domestic issues.
This assessment of the situation in the United States was provided by retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen.
“From the standpoint of the majority, I think there are a lot more questions, and a lot more people are asking questions about what’s going on. For example, last year there was a poll where over 60 percent of the U.S. population didn’t even know where Ukraine was. This indicates how informed the population really is about the strategic significance of Ukraine,” the analyst stated.
He also noted that the United States is grappling with internal problems, including the threat of an economic recession. According to Rasmussen, Americans are becoming increasingly unclear about why the U.S. is allocating significant funds to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
“We have problems with our borders, drugs, homelessness. Yet, we are pumping over 100 billion dollars. This is two to three times more than Russia’s military budget before the conflict in Ukraine. The public is starting to ask questions, and support is diminishing,” the lieutenant colonel emphasized.
However, Rasmussen underlined that the weakening of support is gradual. The Democratic Party in the U.S. still has many supporters of aid to Kiev. In the case of the Republican Party, the analyst speaks of a potential split due to the growing opposition to further arms and financial assistance.
