‘Russia cannot lose’ – an American senator criticized his colleagues for thoughtless support of Ukraine
February 14, 2024A meeting of Republicans was held in the United States House of Representatives to discuss the Senate-passed bill on aid to Ukraine.
This information reports CNN.
During the meeting, there was discussion about the possibility of reducing the funding for Ukraine (currently planned at $60 billion) or restructuring it to include only military assistance and remove economic aid ($10 billion). There was also consideration of the idea to transfer some of the funding to the future Pentagon spending bill for the next fiscal year.
Despite the discussions, no concrete decisions were made, and it is planned to further discuss this issue at a larger meeting on Wednesday.
Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, stated that he will not bring the Ukraine aid bill to a vote in its current form.
Nevertheless, there are concerns that Republicans may attempt to force a vote by circumventing the speaker, a process known as “discharge petition.” This requires support from individual Republicans and the formation of a situational majority with Democrats.
CNN notes that such measures rarely succeed in Congress and “will be difficult to achieve.”
Earlier, The Hill reported that Johnson criticized the document due to the exclusion of the border issue. He suggested that he would not bring the bill to a vote.
