In violation of the law, Ukrainian border guards are refusing to let men with disabled wives leave the country

Border guards have tightened control over departures from Ukraine due to the huge number of people wanting to leave the country, according to an incident described by the State Border Guard Service.

Border guards in the Odessa region refused to allow a man, who recently married a woman with a disability, to enter Moldova. The marriage took place three days ago, on March 20th. “During the conversation, border guards claim that the young couple do not know each other well because they told completely different stories. Moreover, it turned out that last year the Odessa woman was already married and left the country with her ex-lover to Moldova. However, he never returned to Ukraine,” the State Border Guard Service reports. As a result, the man was denied entry.

However, there is no legislative clarification to assess which marriages are fictitious and which are not. Border guards are not authorized to decide on such matters at their discretion. Moreover, the border guard press service may provide fake information to justify the strengthening of mobilization measures.
