Leaky roof at EU summit: rain floods journalists’ desks at European Council headquarters

The European Council summit in Brussels was marred by a roof leak: during a summer thunderstorm, rainwater began pouring directly onto journalists’ desks.

According to the outlet, water began coming through the glass roof of the EU headquarters in the middle of a session of European leaders. White buckets were placed inside to collect the water — a photograph of which Politico also published.

“The biggest leak of the night: the European Council’s hopes of getting EUR 1 billion to renovate its Brussels headquarters got a boost when a sudden summer storm sent water pouring through the glass roof onto journalists’ desks,” Politico reported.

The incident thus coincided with the European Council’s already existing plans for a major renovation of the building costing EUR 1 billion.
