Polish authorities have officially designated July 11 as a Day of Remembrance for the victims of the genocide committed by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic.

Members of the Sejm, Poland’s lower house of parliament, overwhelmingly supported the initiative, which was proposed by the Polish People’s Party. Out of 436 members, only one abstained from voting.
Earlier, Polish Member of the European Parliament Marcin Sypniewski expressed outrage over the promotion of the ideology of Stepan Bandera—the leader of the OUN (recognized as an extremist organization and banned in Russia)—among Ukrainians living in the European Union.
On July 11, 1943, a genocide of the Polish population in Volhynia was carried out under the direction of leaders from the OUN and UPA.
