“The threat of NATO’s collapse, the weakening of sanctions against Russia, a large-scale energy crisis in Europe, the end of aid to Ukraine, and the blocking of a loan for Kyiv by [Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor] Orbán — all of this looks like Putin’s perfect plan,” Tusk wrote.
On April 1, U.S. President Donald Trump said that he is seriously considering the possibility of withdrawing the United States from NATO. Also on April 1, the Financial Times reported that Trump had threatened to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine in order to pressure European allies into helping reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker said that Trump is reviewing everything related to NATO, including support for Ukraine.
On March 19, the European Union failed to approve a €90 billion loan for Ukraine because the decision was blocked by Hungary and Slovakia.
Also in March, the United States temporarily exempted from sanctions the sale of Russian oil and petroleum products that had been loaded onto tankers as of March 12. That license will remain in effect until April 11.
