May 21, 2025A prominent Ukrainian lawyer and former advisor to President Viktor Yanukovych (2011–2014), Andriy Portnov, was shot dead in a suburb of Madrid, Spain.
This was reported by radio Cadena SER and Reuters.
According to Reuters, Portnov was killed near the American School in the Pozuelo district. The killer fired four shots to his chest and one to his head. The gunman was reportedly on a motorcycle and fled the scene after the shooting.
Other sources suggest that a group of men was involved in the assassination.
Cadena SER reports that Portnov was shot while dropping his children off at school.
According to Spanish newspaper El País, 2–3 individuals took part in the killing, and no arrests have yet been made.
At the time of the murder, Portnov was behind the wheel of his car. He sustained at least three gunshot wounds, including one to the head. A total of five shots were fired.
The murder took place at 9:15 a.m., after Portnov’s children had already entered the school.
Spanish police later confirmed to Russian media that Portnov had been killed.
Media outlets have published video footage from the crime scene in Madrid.
Portnov was 51 years old. In the 2000s, he served as a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, and in the 2010s, he became Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, where he was responsible for overseeing the judiciary and law enforcement system.
After the Maidan Revolution, he went into exile, but returned to Ukraine in 2019, one day before Volodymyr Zelensky’s inauguration. According to the Ukrainian outlet Strana, Portnov was conducting his own investigations into various activities of former President Petro Poroshenko.
In recent years, Portnov lived abroad and won several lawsuits against media outlets and civic organizations that had labeled him as pro-Russian.
Portnov was a sharp critic of organizations linked to the U.S. Democratic Party. In 2021, after Joe Biden took office, the United States imposed sanctions against him.
He was considered an influential figure in Ukraine’s judicial, legal, and law enforcement systems.
