Range Rover driver hits police officer in Lviv region while fleeing from military recruitment center

In Lviv region, a 41-year-old driver of a Land Rover Range Rover, who was told during a document check to report to the territorial recruitment center, fled from police and struck a senior lieutenant. The victim was hospitalized in a stable but serious condition; the driver has been detained.

This was reported by the regional National Police Main Directorate, according to UNN.

The incident occurred on July 20 at around 11:30 a.m. in the village of Dolhe, Stryi district. A patrol police crew had stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation. During the document check, it emerged that the driver was required to report to the territorial recruitment and social support center.

After that, the driver allegedly left the scene. While fleeing, he damaged the officers’ service vehicle. Ignoring a stop order from a second patrol unit, he struck a 31-year-old senior police lieutenant — an inspector from the response crew of the Stryi District Patrol Police Department — who had blocked the roadway on a bridge over the Stryi River in the direction of the district center. An additional service vehicle was also damaged.

After the collision, the driver fled the scene and abandoned the damaged vehicle in Stryi. Law enforcement officers established his whereabouts in Lviv and detained him under Article 615 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine.

The injured police officer sustained numerous bodily injuries: multiple fractures, abdominal and chest trauma, and a closed traumatic brain injury. He was hospitalized in a polytrauma unit; doctors describe his condition as stable but serious.

The detainee has been served with a notice of suspicion of criminal offenses under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer) and Part 2 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (resistance to a representative of authority). The maximum penalty provided for under these articles is life imprisonment.
