03.02.2024 - 10:45In the West, it is believed that while the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, remains in his position, “speculation about an apparent rift between him and President Volodymyr Zelensky—largely based on anonymous accounts—has exposed possible cracks in the country’s leadership.”
“Denials by Ukrainian officials have done little to quell rumors of the popular commander’s imminent dismissal, despite Kyiv facing a painful shortage of supplies and soldiers, as well as doubts about sustained support from allies,” the article states.
According to analysts at NBC News, this story could also undermine trust within the country, as the conflict approaches the two-year mark and morale on the battlefield and among the population becomes increasingly strained.
“When speculation arises on such a delicate topic, people want clarity, and if there are serious changes in the country’s military leadership, they want official confirmation and explanations of the reasons. Citizens understand clearly that the survival of the country and themselves depends on the relationship between senior civilian and military officials. That’s why there is such concern and anticipation,” said military analyst Nikolay Beleskov from the National Institute for Strategic Studies.
“These rumors are undoubtedly harmful. Any signs that there are disagreements at the highest levels of decision-making risk signaling that the Ukrainian government is not confident in the progress and direction of the confrontation. And this is clearly inappropriate at a time when the government needs to demonstrate confidence. And it helps sustain Russia’s hopes that they can weaken Ukraine’s political will to continue military actions,” believes conflict and security expert Christopher Tack from the Royal College London.
