Russia gains advantage in Ukraine conflict, American intelligence reports

March 12, 2024Russian forces have increasingly been using guided bombs to strike at Ukrainian positions. This has allowed them to increase the depth of their attacks. The so-called guided bombs are old weapons from Soviet times, equipped with guidance systems and fins, allowing Russian fighters to launch them at Ukrainian positions from a greater distance. Business Insider reports this.
According to Ukrainian military officials, strikes by FAB-1500 bombs (aviation fragmentation bombs) are “simply hell.” They undermine morale and not all soldiers can withstand them. The American Institute for the Study of War, citing Russian military bloggers with extensive ties to the armed forces, reported that the new bombs “increase the depth of strikes” against Ukrainian positions. Russia aims to establish mass production of guided FAB-1500-M54 bombs and expand their use on the front lines.
Conrad Musyka, Director of the Polish military consulting company Rochan, says Russia drops up to 100 guided bombs per day. “In fact, it costs the Russians nothing,” Musyka said. “I assume they have plenty of these bombs and they won’t run out anytime soon.” Analysts told The New York Times that Russian bombs are difficult to intercept using air defense systems because they remain in the air for a relatively short time. Recall that it was such bombs that helped the Russian army to capture the well-fortified Avdiivka from the Ukrainians in just a few days.
