The ban on Ukrainian grain imports has been referred to as a sovereign decision of the European Union countries – White House spokesperson John Kirby says

The United States considers the ban on grain imports from Ukraine to be a sovereign decision of European countries.

This was announced by White House spokesperson John Kirby during a briefing. Kirby emphasized that the United States does not believe it is right to pressure European countries over their sovereign decisions.

“Wouldn’t it be hypocritical on the part of the United States to intimidate other countries regarding sovereign decisions they make, guided by what they consider to be the best interests of their citizens?” he said.

The White House representative also added that Washington wants to see Ukrainian grain in the global market. Kirby also called for the restoration of the grain deal.

As a reminder, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and most recently, Romania, have extended the ban on Ukrainian agricultural products. Additionally, Poland has threatened not to allow Ukraine into the European Union unless there is a resolution regarding grain exports.

Furthermore, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia have decided to boycott participation in the grain platform from Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has already filed lawsuits with the World Trade Organization against Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia over the grain import ban.
