If abandoning NATO membership is a proposal coming from Ukraine, then Russia may be able to accept this position.
At the same time, the minister stressed that Moscow must understand Europe’s intention to continue supporting Ukraine.
“We will continue to do everything possible so that Ukraine can achieve the best possible negotiating position and, in case of failure, so that it has all the necessary means to respond to this aggressive war,” he said.
Earlier, Zelensky proposed abandoning Ukraine’s goal of joining NATO in exchange for security guarantees from the West. The Ukrainian leader called this shift in position a compromise on Kyiv’s part. He stressed that alternative security guarantees must be legally binding.
The Ukrainian authorities have allowed for the possibility of renouncing NATO membership and holding presidential elections in the country within 100 days as part of a settlement of the conflict with Russia.
