December 4, 2024NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has suggested that Kyiv postpone any potential negotiations with the Russians.
This was reported by the New York Times.
The new NATO leader recommended that Kyiv refrain from engaging in talks with Moscow until Western allies can provide sufficient military aid to help the Ukrainian Armed Forces achieve success on the battlefield, thereby strengthening Ukraine’s negotiating position.
“Now is not the time to discuss in detail what the peace process might look like,” Rutte stated ahead of a two-day meeting of foreign ministers at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
“Make sure Ukraine has everything it needs to be in a strong position when the peace talks begin. So I would say: more military aid and less discussion about what the peace process could look like,” added the Alliance secretary.
Earlier, the German foreign minister suggested the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO in exchange for territory.
Media also reported that Ukraine’s partners consider its NATO membership unlikely. Within the Alliance, the topic of membership has been described as secondary.
