The Prime Minister of Saxony called for a diplomatic resolution of the conflict in Ukraine

The time has come to attempt a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

This call was made by the Prime Minister of the German federal state of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, in an interview with “Tagesspiegel”.

“Despite military aid, no significant progress has been made in the strategy to end the war on the battlefield over the past two and a half years. It’s time to try a more diplomatic approach,” he said.

The publication notes that the head of the Saxon government also supported the idea proposed by Friedrich Merz, the candidate for the position of Chancellor of Germany from the opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU). Merz suggested creating a contact group that would include Germany, Britain, France, and Poland to develop plans for European arrangements after the end of the conflict in Ukraine. According to Kretschmer, Merz’s proposal effectively detailed plans for Europe’s post-conflict structure.

Earlier, Kretschmer, together with the Prime Minister of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke, and the head of the CDU in Thuringia, Mario Voigt, called on the German government to make more active efforts to seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The politicians believe that Berlin should create a powerful diplomatic alliance to initiate peace negotiations.
