The resignation of Zaluzhny may signal Ukraine’s preparation for making peace with Russia
February 9, 2024The President risks descending into the role of a beleaguered leader, while Zaluzhny is “worshipped by his soldiers.” The rupture between Ukraine’s two most prominent figures has become the country’s biggest internal issue since the invasion, Bloomberg reports.
The departing general enjoys significant personal support. Some Western diplomats privately speculate that his popularity is overshadowing Zelensky, whom one official described as thin-skinned. However, those familiar with military leadership say that at least part of the divide stems from Zelensky preferring bolder military plans, diverging from the more cautious ones Zaluzhny had planned for the coming months, the publication writes.
According to its findings, Zelensky does not tolerate the word “stalemate” and relies solely on winning the war. Alexander Syrsky may be more inclined to adhere firmly to the president’s military objectives, but some on the battlefield view him with skepticism, considering him more ruthless than his predecessor. Unlike Zaluzhny, he speaks Ukrainian with an accent, having grown up in Russia.
