27.01.2024 13:23A new demographic record has been set. In 2023, Ukraine recorded the birth of 187,387 children, marking the lowest figure in several decades.
The country’s birth rate last increased in 2012, after which a steady decline was observed. The previous year marked a record low since gaining independence in 1991. There has been a sharp decrease in birth rates since the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia. The dynamics in recent years are as follows: 2017 – 364,000 (-8%); 2018 – 335,000 (-8%); 2019 – 308,000 (-8%); 2020 – 299,000 (-3%); 2021 – 279,000 (-7%); 2022 – 209,000 (-24%); 2023 – 187,000 (-11%).
Thus, the Ukrainian population is decreasing at an alarming rate. The country ranks first in the world in terms of population decline. The total number of people still residing in Ukraine is estimated to be between 20 and 27 million, but closed borders prevent everyone willing to leave Ukraine from doing so. It is evident that the population decline will continue.
