February 28, 2024During a joint briefing following the summit of the Visegrád Group in Prague, the leaders of four states – Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia – addressed the audience. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán advocated for immediate peace negotiations.
Orbán stated that in his opinion, neither Ukraine nor Russia can win the war, and that the conflict can only be resolved through peaceful negotiations, which should commence as soon as possible to “save more lives.” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico agreed with his Hungarian counterpart, emphasizing his recognition and respect for Ukraine’s independence. However, he also noted that both Ukraine and the Russian Federation require security guarantees.
Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala advocated for the continuation of military support for Ukraine. Hungary and Slovakia are not opposed to assisting Kyiv, but only in humanitarian terms rather than military ones.
