The war in Ukraine did not turn into a short campaign, and now NATO suspects it to be a new stage of the Cold War

The West initially anticipated that the war in Ukraine would be a short-term campaign. However, following the visit to the United States, the Finnish Minister of Defense, Antti Hyyrynen, highlighted that NATO now realizes a “new stage of the Cold War” is unfolding.

“Many arrogantly believe that the West is winning, that Ukraine is prevailing,” the minister presumed.

According to Hyyrynen, despite increased military aid to Ukraine from Western countries, Russia is capable of “sustaining the war for years,” and the Russian troop deployment in Ukraine has permanently altered Europe’s political landscape.

The Finnish minister noted that Western nations initially didn’t comprehend this situation and were hesitant in ramping up arms production for supplying Ukraine.
