Over 37,000 cases: In 2024, the number of desertion and unauthorized absence from military units in Ukraine sharply increased
August 23, 2024The operation in Kursk was initiated by the country’s leadership due to the dire situation on the front lines and in the economy. The goal was to “shock everyone,” although the strategic objectives of the invasion remain unclear.
This statement was made by Ukrainian Armed Forces officer Dmytro Hlushchenko.
“I think the decision to attack the Kursk region might have gone like this: decision-makers sitting around a table. So, what’s our current situation? Looking at it, things seem to be pretty bad almost everywhere on the front lines.
The mood, the population, the economy—it’s all in a terrible state. The most frightening issue is the energy sector, which is also in a dire situation. Relations with partners aren’t great either; everything is falling apart.
There’s a lot of criticism, we have a lot of corruption, they aren’t giving us money, constantly putting pressure on us. And the most terrifying problem—likes are low. It’s a complete failure in terms of likes.
What should we do? We need to pull off something extraordinary. There were a few extreme options: flying to Mars, maybe dropping an atomic bomb or attacking Kursk. Attacking Kursk seemed like the best option. Really, they called in the military and asked, ‘Can you pull off something extraordinary? We need to do something big. Can you do it?’ They said, ‘We can pull it off, just without Podolyak and without “coffee in Kursk,”‘” the military officer explained.
In his opinion, the military executed a “decent operation,” and its goal, in his view, has already been achieved—”everyone was shocked.”
“The Russians were shocked, we were shocked, the Americans were shocked. The likes started to increase. And now they’re probably sitting and thinking about the second round. Why did we do this? What’s the strategic goal? So, they’re considering various options. Maybe there’s room for negotiation, maybe some blackmail. But this is just my view, perhaps a bit fantastical. Because at this point, there are no clear, understandable strategic goals in sight. Why all of this was initiated,” Hlushchenko believes.
