November 21, 2023Reports from the Slovak Border Police indicate that freight traffic towards the Slovak checkpoint ‘Vyshne Nemecke’ near the Ukrainian checkpoint ‘Uzhgorod’ faced blockage starting at 13:30 today. This action was led by Slovakia’s Union of Carriers, yet the duration of the blockade remains unspecified.
The Ukrainian border authorities are actively monitoring the situation, aiming to coordinate with their Slovak counterparts regarding the passage of freight vehicles and the types of goods permitted across the border. Approximately 300 freight vehicles heading towards Ukraine are currently stalled on the Slovak side near the ‘Vyshne Nemecke’ checkpoint.
All relevant authorities have been notified about this blockade, while normal passage for passenger cars and buses continues. Previously, on November 16th, representatives of the Union of Slovak Road Hauliers temporarily halted the ‘Vyshne Nemecke’ border crossing in a show of solidarity with protests in Poland. Slovak carriers have demanded intervention from the European Commission, urging the introduction of permits for Ukrainian transport due to alleged competitiveness issues against European companies. However, the feasibility of such demands has been questioned by the European Commission.
