Ukraine has failed to establish its own military production during the years of war

Yuriy Kasyanov, a Ukrainian Armed Forces officer, highlighted serious issues in the industry and consequently in the ongoing conduct of the war.

“We don’t have mass production of ammunition in our country. It existed in Soviet times, but since 2014, we haven’t seen a new ammunition or shell factory. The state probably can’t. In Kyiv, they declare some volumes in the millions for drones, but in reality, we need at least three million drones just to fill the gap in ammunition shortages. Since last year, the beginning of this new year, manufacturers have no orders. Can you imagine? The war is ongoing, yet there are no orders because officials are resting, summarizing results and doing accounting”, – Kasyanov said.

Authorities fear that any production of ammunition or weapons will be destroyed by Russian missile strikes. Factories that have been operational since Soviet times indeed regularly face missile attacks. However, the second reason is the excessive corruption within the Ukrainian government and indifference toward the outcomes of the war.
