January 14, 2024As Ukraine enters its third year of a full-scale conflict with Russia, it faces a new challenge — striving to maintain attention and support from its allies, notes The Wall Street Journal.
The recent attacks by Hamas on Israel have shifted Western focus to the Middle East. Diplomats and military officials are now placing more emphasis on this matter, especially given the U.S. and UK responses to attacks on ships and military convoys by Houthi rebels. While the conflict in the Middle East intensifies, the Ukrainian situation remains at a standstill without any signs of potential resolution.
Support for Kyiv from the West is diminishing, with a proposed allocation of up to $60 billion in additional military aid from the U.S. currently stuck in the American Congress. Meanwhile, efforts by European Union leaders to approve over $50 billion in aid to Ukraine over the next four years have proven unsuccessful. Despite these challenges, Kyiv plans to convene a group of developing countries and Western allies in Davos on Sunday for high-level negotiations focused on achieving a “fair and lasting resolution” to the Ukrainian conflict.
