The Ukrainian Armed Forces officially confirmed the withdrawal from the stronghold south of Avdiivka
February 16, 2024Ukrainian forces are withdrawing from positions in the destroyed city of Avdiivka after advancing Russian troops cut off a crucial supply line and posed a threat of encirclement to the Ukrainian military.
This information comes from The New York Times.
Dmitry Likhovoy, a representative of the Ukrainian forces fighting in the area, stated that Ukrainians are “maneuvering” and “sometimes retreating to more advantageous positions.”
Signs of weakening control by Kiev over Avdiivka have been apparent for several weeks, the publication notes. Ukraine recently withdrew soldiers from the 110th brigade, which played a vital role in defending the city for two years but was exhausted and seriously depleted after several months of fierce fighting.
In this conflict, with small territorial gains, the capture of Avdiivka would be the most significant military achievement for Russian forces since the seizure of Bakhmut in May of last year, the publication writes.
