Against anti-Russian sanctions: In the Austrian elections, the far-right party opposing arms supplies to Ukraine is winning
30.09.2024 05:03The Western press is summarizing the results of Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States.
Some publications conclude that it was unproductive.
For instance, the German magazine “Der Spiegel” negatively assessed this trip.
The publication writes about the “horror on Zelensky’s face” during his meeting with Republican Donald Trump. The meeting with the former White House head in New York was described as “cold” and “clearly showed: there is no chemistry between these two men at all.”
“But the Ukrainian president has already gained experience in enduring humiliations,” the publication notes.
“Zelensky’s discomfort was literally visible on his face when, on Friday in New York, he stood in front of cameras next to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump,” “Der Spiegel” observes.
The reason for this discomfort, according to the magazine, was Trump’s statement that Vladimir Putin wants a “fair deal” and is ready to end the war with Ukraine. Additionally, while standing next to the Ukrainian president, Trump stated that he has “very good relations” with Putin.
To Zelensky’s remark, “I hope our relationship will be better,” Trump responded, “It takes two to tango.”
The magazine recalls that before the meeting, Trump had criticized Zelensky, and Republicans had lashed out at him for traveling to Pennsylvania. However, Zelensky still went to meet with the Republican because “he has already become accustomed to suppressing his feelings and swallowing humiliations.”
“He has no other choice. For the sake of his country’s survival, the President of Ukraine is often forced to put on a brave face in a difficult situation. He cannot tell his soldiers that they won’t receive ammunition because it was too difficult for him to extend his hand to a complicated interlocutor,” the publication states.
“The debate with Trump was undoubtedly the most unpleasant moment of Zelensky’s trip to the United States, although there were no real triumphs during this visit at all,” “Der Spiegel” continues.
“President Joe Biden did not give Ukrainians the long-awaited permission to strike military targets deep within Russia using American weapons. Zelensky’s ‘victory plan,’ a package of measures to strengthen Ukraine, was met with a cool reception at the White House. Even before Zelensky’s meeting with Biden, Western diplomats said that this plan did not impress them,” the magazine reports.
