The head of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is possible in exchange for territories

NATO membership in exchange for territory – this “peace formula” was proposed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, following the example of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Baerbock stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership could become part of a potential peace agreement with Russia, which could also include the concession of some of the occupied Ukrainian territories.

“There are various elements of a peace agreement: political and material security guarantees, NATO membership, international presence to maintain the ceasefire, withdrawal of troops, territorial issues, reconstruction, and the settlement of sanctions. Ukraine decides for itself what goals it will bring to the negotiating table,” she said.

Recall, earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed opposition to quickly admitting Ukraine into NATO during his visit to Kyiv.

Allies also consider Ukraine’s NATO membership unlikely. Within NATO itself, the issue has been called secondary.
