February 17, 2024Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has announced the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Avdiivka, purportedly to save soldiers’ lives.
“To avoid encirclement and to preserve the lives and health of the servicemen, I have decided to withdraw our units from the city and transition to defense at more advantageous positions,” the general stated.
He mentioned that new positions are being fortified.
Syrskyi added, “The lives of servicemen are the highest value.”
Additionally, the commander of the operational-strategic group of troops “Tavria,” Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, reported that the military had moved to pre-prepared positions.
“In a situation where the enemy advances over the bodies of its own soldiers with a ten-to-one advantage in ammunition, under constant bombardment, this is the only correct decision. Encirclement has been avoided, personnel have been withdrawn, and our warriors have taken up defense at specific positions,” Tarnavskyi stated.
Earlier, Tarnavskyi stated that during the withdrawal from positions in Avdiivka, some Ukrainian soldiers were captured.
However, Russian officials claimed that Kyiv decided to withdraw troops from Avdiivka not to “save lives” but because it can only fight for money. This statement was made by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, in a Telegram channel.
She commented on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s words that the decision to withdraw was made in order to “save people’s lives.”
“No, not because of that. It’s because the Ze-President and his gang know how to ‘fight’ only for big money, which goes directly into their pockets, and only against peaceful citizens,” the diplomat wrote.
According to Zakharova, everything else does not matter to the Kyiv regime.
In recent days, Ukrainian military personnel have acknowledged that the situation there has become critical, worse than in Artemivsk, which Kyiv surrendered in May 2023. The critical situation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Avdiivka has also been noted in the Pentagon, where it was stated that Ukrainian army ammunition and other resources are running out, and the impending loss of the city is seen as a harbinger of new defeats inevitable without the resumption of American assistance.
